Sorry, but EQUAL size to a 720 rip only shows you over compressed. I don't but your quality one second. 1080 web rips are early 900 MB ... and there is a reason for it.
It's hazy. Audio is out of sync minimally but visible to the naked ear/eye. This is hardly 1080 quality released by "scene" folks by web-dl !!

I didn't over compress anything, the source was over compressed. I watched it and I thought it looked really good on my 42" TV

It quite non-obvious that the audio is out of sync - hardly noticeable, but is. So now it's not your quality but someone else's responsibility. So as it is over-compressed it is crap, but as you say you don't downgrade crap - so you admit it, but now take no responsibility for it. Got it !
