I'm using these instruction and getting nowhere, I'm getting this message Unable to scan "InstallOSXUSB" (Resource busy)
@datars1
I think the dmg file is mounted on your desktop. Unmount the dmg. Disconnect and reconnect the usb stick. I think this will help.
I get the same issue as datars1.
Disk utility must scan the disk image first,
=> "Unable to scan "Install OS X El Capitan.dmg" (Invalid argument)".

Tried dragging and dropping from various partitions, whole disks etc. Anyone with a fix / tutorial explaining what I am doing wrong? Would be greatly appreciated!
1. Select the image. (dmg file) (in Disk Utility)
2. Go to the top menu of the Disk Utility application: Images > Scan for Restore.
3. Now you're able to restore the dmg to your usb flash drive.
I went back into my torrent client and did a force recheck. It came back as 99.9%, So I restarted the download and it would download for a 1 min, then stop with this message Error: ReadFromDisk: hostname not found

what's really fuck-up, is I cannot make a comment here in safari browser. I had to use my PC to do so.

Thanks to anyone if they can help out with this

Thanks to anyone that can help with this. also anyone else having a problem
What I had to do was take the image file to my PC and have uTorrent finish the rest of the download, then take it back to my Mac and try again with uTorrent and it gave me 100% But no luck making the bootable drive. I gave DiskMaker v5 a try also with on luck.

I than did a right click on the image and open with disk utility, I now was able to make a bootable flash drive. Now why did that work and not the other way around?
Thank you!
Working for hackintosh with bootdiskutility, unlike some others that get uploaded. Thanks.
*warning: El Capitan has included a number a of measure that makes the platform even more closed than it was before, so a number of customizing apps and things that alter system files (when you want them to) simply don't work on this OS*

WORKS GREAT. though i had to do the same procedure 2x. the first install after i created a bootable image, installed it or began the process and went on for some time till some error came up (this was month ago or so) and essentially said it didn't have the files to install the OS

on second install it ran through just fine and turned my girlfriends old 2011 Macbook Pro from 10.8 to 10.11 after i learned you cannot use their service to download the old OS after I partitioned the drive, installed a new battery (3x the life it had) and while it hangs sometimes (did a 6 run memtest with no fails) for reasons unknown to me (i suspect it overheated and the integrated gpu is causing some errors) it's nothing that bad considering it is not my main rig at all and now i can learn how to use OS X systems and have a new primary laptop with a new lease on life (sorry transformer, great deal and all, but it is better suited as a tablet than a workstation at this point(tiny keyboard and nearly unusable touchpad)

looking forward to turning this into a dual boot.

Does anyone know if we can update this? is this considered a legit install by Apple?
Thanks....
Remember to set the date of your Mac by going into the terminal and changing the clock to a date similar to the release date of El Capitan (about 09/2015): this is due because this install has the digital signatures expired, therefore the installer will refuse to progress during the start of the install.
Change the date by using the Unix command "date MMDDHHmmYY " with:
MM - 2 digit month 01 - 12
DD - 2 digit date 01 - 31
HH - 2 digit hour 01 - 24
mm - 2 digit minute 01 - 59
YY - 2 digit year > 15
italicus11 it's true! Thanks! I'm installing and it is not working and then i go to the terminal and wrote:
date 1020133015
Now i have El Capitan installed. It's working.
thanks to twoshare and italicus11

if you get an error that the install is corrupt or unverified

go to the terminal and write:
date 1020133015

it will install after that

many thanks and good luck
I am downloading now.
I will write -Later- an opinion about how it resulted for me in my MacBook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008)
Hold on.

This is no working for my 2007 macbook white.
I follow step by step and did the date change and when i click to install after restart my comp and press alt key i chose for the pen drive the system show me an a error. WHAT IS WRONG !!!???
Hi, please I followed all instructions accordingly but getting the following error on clean install;
"an error occurred while preparing the installation. try running this application again. el capitan"
I am also unable to erase the hard drive via the usb installer's disk utility. The Erase just fails instantly.
Anybody with any idea on how to fix this?
This absolutely does not work, do not waste your time.
why dont work? i need change the date ?
Works just fine on my iMac from 2009. Thanks a lot !

Instructions are pretty clear for OS X versions before El Capitan and after, for the error - "this copy of the install os x el capitan application can't be verified it may have been corrupted or tampered with during downloading" a solution is given by @italicus11 and @twoshare.

I had problems with the erase before, but apparently they were hardware problems (my hdd failed and needed a new one).
got circle with a line through it when trying to boot from this, using the transmac method
update: problem was likely due to drive being MBR (i think) instead of GPT, I think transmac must auto format with MBR
