GUSTAVE FLAUBERT (1821-1880) was an influential French writer who is counted among the greatest novelists in Western literature. He is known especially for his scrupulous devotion to his art and style, a perfectionism that cost him enormous toil but brought him only limited success in his own lifetime.

MADAME BOVARY (1857) is a seminal work of Realism and one of the most influential novels ever written. Its realistic portrayal of bourgeois life led to a trial on charges of the novel's alleged immorality. Henry James said the book "has a perfection that not only stamps it, but that makes it stand almost alone; it holds itself with such a supreme unapproachable assurance as both excites and defies judgment."

SALAMMBO (1862), a historical novel set in Carthage during the 3rd century, is largely an exercise in sensuous and violent exoticism. Following the success of BOVARY, it was another best-seller and sealed his reputation. SENTIMENTAL EDUCATION (1869), a vast panorama of France under the July Monarchy and intended as the moral history of his generation, was largely misunderstood by the critics and received a cool public reception. The diversity of themes in THREE TALES (1877) -- "A Simple Heart", "Saint Julian the Hospitalier," and "Hérodias" -- shows Flaubert's talent in all its aspects and is considered by many to be his masterpiece.

After his death in 1880, Flaubert's fame and reputation grew steadily, strengthened by the publication of his unfinished and savagely satiric BOUVARD AND PÉCUCHET (1881) and the many remarkable volumes of his Correspondence.

The Flaubert update! I've been waiting for this. Thanks!
Great work, workerbee, thank you very much!
Ah! A Great Upload! As some else says before me - a much awaited one too.

Here's something from Braithwaite's Dictionary of Accepted Ideas :

FLAUBERT - The hermit of Croisset. The first modern novelist. The father of Realism. The butcher of Romanticism. The pontoon bridge linking Balzac to Joyce. The precursor of Proust. The bear in his lair. The bourgeois bourgeoisophobe.
In general, Flaubert is among the most admired authors of all time; frankly very few authors dislike him. Indeed most critics would attest to this statement :

"Writers of prose fition as various as Joseph Conrad, Franz Kafka, Isaac Babel, James Joyce, and Vladimir Nabokov would not be imaginable without the example of Flaubert (in all these instances he was an example studied
with minute technical care); and even more important, he fundamentally altered assumptions about how a writer should relate both to language and to readers."
While Flaubert's position in the Western Canon is safely secured, it is hard to decide which of his works is his best. Critical Opinion vacillates between 'Bovary' and 'Education' (with Education currently leading). Nabokov and James both named Mme Bovary the BEST FRENCH novel yet. Mallarme supposedly did a typical avant garde stunt for 'St. Anthony'. Kafka mentions 'Sentimental Education' as his favourite. 'Three Tales' garnered for Flaubert the most repute in his lifetime.

And Gide called Flaubert's letters to be his masterpiece.
In my opinion, the 'Madame Bovary' translation to go for is the Steegmuller one. It reads vividly, is exacting and by someone who is devoted to Flaubert. I cannot comment on the Adam Thorpe one but its supposed to be good.

The Constantine vs Parmee translation (both Oxford) has a clear winner. Mrs. Constantine has revised hers carefully; some passages (that I compared) are more taut and muscular, that is to say more thoughtful.

Both Krailsheimer and Whitehouse have done a thorough job on 'A Simple Heart' - the most emotional piece by Flaubert ever. Don't know what else to say
Oh yeah :

Down with Geoffrey Wall's muddled introductions to the otherwise good Penguin editions of Flaubert! We have enough problems as it is without him creating imaginary ones...
@Arzoo - Thanks for your thoughtful assessments and illuminating quotations. Putting this torrent together has motivated me to revisit 'Sentimental Education', which I haven't read in a long time, and you've convinced me to begin with Constantine's new translation. Now if I can just find the time . . .

Arzoo's second quotation is from Robert Alter (in his 'Motives for Fiction'). Somehow I knew that Alter might appear in these comments. ;-)
Thank you very much!
@nedand - Great to hear from you again. It's been ages.
My friend, do you have Lectures on the Will to Know by Foucault in epub? Thank you for everything!
@SirPeterRussel - I haven't seen it in ePub. You know you can contact me (or place requests) on SuprBay, right?

Here's another :

"Human language is like a cracked kettle in which we beat out our tunes for bears to dance to, when all the while we long to move the stars to pity."

from Madame Bovary and Selected Letters
Is this @workerbee's greatest contribution yet?

At least, for this year it is - I think....
