MARILYNNE ROBINSON (b. 1943) is an American novelist and essayist. Her novels are noted for both their mid-20th century American Midwest setting as well as their thematic depiction of rural life and faith. They are distinguished by glorious prose, subtle wisdom and a darkly numinous atmosphere, lit at moments by a visionary wonder shading into exaltation. Of her first novel, HOUSEKEEPING (1980), which won the Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, Anatole Broyard stated: "It's as if, in writing it, she broke through the ordinary human condition with all its dissatisfactions, and achieved a kind of transfiguration." GILEAD (2004), which won the 2005 Pulitzer Prize, and HOME (2008), which received the 2009 Orange Prize for Fiction (UK), explore the intersections of two families in a small Iowa town. Kirkus Reviews called GILEAD "as big as a nation, as quiet as thought, and moving as prayer. Matchless and towering." The books are companion pieces held together by the friendship of the Reverend John Ames, a 76-year-old pastor considering his mortal and spiritual life, and his neighbour, the Reverend Boughton. In LILA (2014), Robinson returns to the town of Gilead, telling the story of Ames's much younger wife. Together, the Gilead novels rebuke contemporary carelessness, asking us to be less comfortable, to stop building shrines to ourselves and start reimagining the commonweal. Robinson is also a prolific essayist and commentator. MOTHER COUNTRY (1989) is a controversial examination of the environmental impact of a British nuclear reprocessing plant. THE DEATH OF ADAM (1998) collects her rigorous reassessments of major figures in poetry, science, and history. ABSENCE OF MIND (2010) challenges postmodern atheists who crusade against religion under the banner of science, and celebrates the power and variety of human consciousness in the tradition of William James. The essays in WHEN I WAS A CHILD I READ BOOKS (2012) tackle the global debt crisis and the deeply embedded role of generosity in Christian faith. "When I Was a Child," one of her most personal essays to date, is an account of her childhood in Idaho that becomes an exploration of individualism and the myth of the American West. Her most recent collection, THE GIVENNESS OF THINGS (2015), delivers an impassioned critique of contemporary society -- our addiction to technology, our materialism -- while arguing that reverence must be given to who we are and what we are: creatures of singular interest and value, despite our errors and depredations.
