An Endangered Species - The Autobiography By David Gower with Simon Wilde Simon & Schuster UK Ltd. | June 2013 | ISBN 978-1-47110-237-0 | 312 pages | PDF | 11 mb scannedto PDF by me with OCR, bookmarks & covers. When the curly, blond-haired David Gower casually stroked the first ball he faced in Test cricket to the boundary, he immediately won the enthusiastic support of England fans everywhere. His elegant skill with the bat, combined with supreme ability in the field, ensured that he was seen as a key part of a golden age of English cricket, playing alongside such great names as Ian Botham, Mike Gatting, Graham Gooch and Allan Lamb. Gower followed up the fairytale beginning by leading his country to Ashes victory and success in India - two of cricket's toughest challenges. But his seemingly Corinthian approach to the game began to be perceived as being out of step with modern thinking, which valued hard work above all else. His effortless style did not fit well with the new era, and players of his ilk were seen as an endangered species - however much the game's fans continued to thrill to his play. In this definitive memoir, Gower looks back at an extraordinary career and shares with the reader the marvellous fun to be had as a young man playing at the pinnacle of his sport, not to mention a notorious flight in a Tiger Moth and an ill-fated drive on a frozen Swiss lake. But behind the laidback fa£ade was a man who had to face up to huge pressures and the occasional crippling loss of form. Now, after more than 20 years working in the commentary box, he can look back on it all to give a vivid portrait of a wonderful career. About the Author David Gower was born in Kent in 1957, but spent much of his early childhood in East Africa. He was educated at King's School, Canterbury, and soon after joined Leicestershire. He made his England debut in 1978 and went on to win 117 Test caps, scoring a then-record 8231 runs, and captained the side on 32 occasions. He also played for Hampshire, and retired from the game in 1993. Subsequently, he has had a second highly successful career as a broadcaster, being one of the team captains of the long-running game show They Think It's All Over, and he is now the host of Sky's Test match coverage.
