1 - The Northern Lights 
11 year old Lyra lives in a world parallel to ours, a world where souls exist externally in the form of an animal, a daemon. Lyra discovers that there are dark forces at work and is catapulted into a life-and-death struggle to save not only herself but the future of all worlds, a struggle that will take her beyond The Northern Lights. 2 - The Subtle Knife 
The second book starts in our world, when 12-year-old Will accidentally kills a man. He escapes into the parallel world of Cittagazze where he meets 11-year-old Lyra, and together they acquire the most powerful weapon in all the universes - the subtle knife.
