Αγέλαστος Πέτρα, του Φίλιππου Κουτσαφτή / Agelastos Petra (The Mourning Rock), by Philippos Koutsaftis: Agelastos Petra is a documentary about Eleusis. Eleusis was a rural area near Athens by the sea. It was a place of unparalleled natural beauty, the home of the refugees from Minor Asia, and one of the most important archaeological sites in Attica. Eleusis was heavily industrialized from the late 60s to the 80s during the military dictatorship and afterwards. Farmers were expulsed to make way for the industries and the residents of the town were converted to cheap labour. The documentary was shot over the course of ten years. It documents the destruction of the archaeological sites, the political ongoings, the rescue excavations and the people of Eleusis who still remember those parts of history. The only constant “hero” of this film is a homeless man who has been retrieving antiquities for the archaeological service from dump sites and construction landfills- where they were dumped by building companies so that the archaeological service couldn’t interfere with the building process. Agelastos Petra was where Demeter (Ceres) first leaned to rest and mourn the loss of her daughter Persephone. The symbolism behind this loss has acquired a new meaning with the destruction of Eleusis; that of a destroyed and lost past.
