ALEKSANDR BLOK (1880-1921) was a Russian lyrical poet and playwright, and the principal representative of Russian Symbolism, a modernist literary movement that was similar to its European counterpart but was strongly imbued with indigenous Eastern Orthodox religious and mystical elements

For Arzoo. :-)
It is always an honor to be a dedicatee(!) - see a previous Robert Alter torrent and especially when you look up an old friend's stuff in a while.

I have been aware of this torrent (9 months of gestation apparently! - judging from an old post by @WB).
Certainly very little of Blok is available anywhere - let alone in the Internet. Which is jarring - seeing he is unanimously acclaimed by the Russians as their best poet after Pushkin.

Can a non-Russian speaker see why? Nope - I can't. Blok's permanence certainly isn't due to mysticism or symbolism - but due to poetic technique.

Nabokov had once written to his friend Edmund Wilson, who was learning Russian to be able to tackle Blok that "Be warned - after Blok everything would seem unBlokish and flat."

The contemporary public had also acclaimed his lyrical strength among other things.
Let us seek an illustration - the best version of Baudelaire's Invitation to a Voyage - I have seen is Richard Wilbur's great translation of it in his Poems. But the original - when read and listened to seems a very different affair.

The rhyme scheme is different - it's a different thing altogether. And Blok is supposed to be an even more melodic and consummate rhymester than Baudelaire.
I suppose an ideal edition of Blok would be by having the Russian transliterated, properly accented and having a pronouncement guide. Then perhaps we can come close to Blok.

But what we have unfortunately - the Cyrillic Script and the English paraphrase of it.
Nevertheless, some trivia :

Blok was the husband of Mendeleev's (the Modern Periodic Table guy) beautiful daughter Lyubov. Later Andrei Bely would join their already tumultous relationship.

Alexander Blok apparently was no less beautiful himself, in words of Mirsky, his very appearance had the majesty of a "fallen angel".

Apparently the reading public (at the time) knew his verses by heart much like that of Pushkin.
Like many others, he welcomed the Russian Revolution seeing in it something mystical or something like that.
He was quickly disillusioned and wrote no poetry after the Revolution and died a few years after it. Here, we must credit Gorky for an impassioned plea well documented in Wikipedia.
On 29 May 1921, Gorky wrote to the Education minister: "Blok is Russia's finest poet. If you forbid him to go abroad, and he dies, you and your comrades will be guilty of his death". A resolution on departure for Blok was signed by members of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee on 23 July 1921. The permission was delivered (for Blok and his wife) on 10 August, after Blok had already died."
Before we get lost in further in the Blok mythos - it is best to sample some of the books in this torrent. Avril Pyman is a good place to start but with extreme caution.

Kneller's version is hideous.
