""Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" professes to be a true hard-boiled movie, the first of its kind in Korea. Although many Korean films have previously laid claim to the genre, those movies have used strategically placed humorous scenes to ease the audience's tension, rather than to set their roots in realism. Hard-boiled movies are not about easing tension.
They portray reality as it is from beginning to end and keep the audience riveted so as to leave an unforgettable impression in their minds. "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" aspires to be such a movie. It shows how the society we live in and breathe in storms into an individual's life, and how an individual breaks down under its force.
In an excess of embellishment overridden with tears and laughter, forceful images and catharsis reach out to the audience."

"Ryu tries to donate one of his kidneys to his sick sister, only to receive the diagnosis that his is not appropriate for her.
On top of this, he is fired from his factory for missing work to care for his sister, and his severance pay is only 10 million won ($7,000). First he gets mixed up with an organ seller in the black market who steals his kidney, then he also loses his 10 million won. He gets a call from the hospital saying they have a match for his sister but it's too late.
Ryu's girlfriend Youngmi suggests kidnapping a rich man's child, saying, "kidnapping for a good reason is not a crime...""
