Synposis (Wikipedia)
In 1919 Latvia, a detachment of German soldiers is stationed in a chateau in the town of Kratovice to fight Bolshevik guerrillas. The chateau is the home of the soldier Konrad de Reval and his sister Sophie de Reval. Sophie is attracted to another soldier, a close friend of Konrad's named Erich von Lhomond. However, the reticent Erich rebuffs her advances. In retaliation, Sophie has trysts with other members of the military troop. Erich is noticeably angered by her behavior. Eventually, Sophie learns that Erich and Konrad are lovers. After this discovery, she joins the leftist guerrillas, whom she had been in contact with previously. Erich's soldiers capture her and her comrades. Sophie asks that Erich execute her himself, and he obliges. In a striking single tracking shot, we see Erich casually shoot Sophie in the head before joining in a photo with the other soldiers. As all board a train, the camera pans back to the corpses of the executed.

Comments (:-))	----------------------------
If you want to see a war happening, this is probably the film. War is something which happens as a matter of course, so there's nothing heroic or unusual about it. One also wonders what must have been passing through the minds of the German soldiers (remember that this is WWI), where it was not exactly about German domination of the world.

Notes on the Subs	------------------------
There are lots of files for subtitles. These are
.IDX + .SUB (in RAR format, read automatically by VobSub)
	.SRT

You need EITHER the first OR the second.

I've really ckecked and formatted the SRT, so this is the only file you actually need. In case you want to burn the IDX/SUB, you may delete the SRT before burning. In my opinion, the SRT is better.

About the Rip	----------------------------
Film runs about 100 min, so this was the best I could do using DivX. An MKV rip would have had much better quality, but it wouldn't play on standlaones.

It's not a very high-quality rip, but considering the original (B&W, monaural) there hardly seems to be the need.

Well, I knew there was a considerable demand for this film... and was amazed when I couldn't find it on the 'Net for over two years...

So, here it is. I'm hoping someone would start seeding after completing. Right now it's 27 leechers helping each other, and one seeder. Unfortunately I cannot commandeer another machine...
It's a great relief... after 14 hours, good to see half a dozen of you complete the d/l and begin seeding... Need your help, got a couple of other Criterion Collection films coming up in a few days...

Thanks a lot, enjoy and seed...!
Hey,
this looks really good!! Thx for sharing! And thanks to you seeders too!!

I presume the freakyflicks guys (whoever they are) won't be offended...
Hi zeinabqureshi,
Thanks again for this masterpiece. Have also tried finding 'The Morals of Ruth Halbfass ' which was recommended to me some years ago but I've never come across this in any form.
many thanks for your quality work!
Nice to hear the comment, glad to share. Schlondorff is poorly represented, though... when compared to Wenders and Fassbinder and Herzog... was amazed to find that only his 'Tin Drum' was actually available on torrent...if I lay my hands on anything by Schlondorff, you'll find it here.
Some bighearted heavy-duty seeder should help... there are three seeders at least (my client shows there are five), and I can't support it myself, got three other torrents going...this torrent is in danger...please SEED...
@maxgrande:
Thanks for your patience. This was my first rip using VirtualDubMod... and I guess I did spend a night or so over it...don't recall if I included the rip info (but somewhat later on, made it a regular feature of my torrent descriptions).
Yes, you're right, this one's hard to find and it is one of Schlondorff's best films, if not *the* best. (The Tin Drum had a nice novel to back it up, and so had the Torless film). This film required more effort, since the original French novel wasn't nearly as famous as the others ones.
Zeinab, I always thought I was crazy about films but you are in a different league all together. The depth and breadth of movies you have seen is simply amazing. You would do great as a film critic.
P.S. I am posting this message on other movie boards because I do not know which one you would read.
To our "film crazy" Mr Kidwai:
You are right, you're the one who's crazy about films...after watching hundreds of films, if one still retains that enthusiasm that he had when he watched his first Tarkovsky, then he should surely be a crazy film buff...but somehow, it's wearing thin on me these days...and I've lost interest completely. Best wishes to you and for all those crazy fans of film...but I believe film is past its heyday, it's a dead medium just like print and the arts.
may 2009- zero seeds... any chance of some seeding, people...? thanks
Torrent has revived, thanks to the seeders who made this possible. In my opinion, the most underrated of Schlöndorff's classic movies.
