When Swedish black metal comes into conversation, you'll very rarely find mention of Malign. This baffles me. Despite the fact that they've only released two EPs (both presented here in their entirety) aside from their demos, Malign stands tall as some of the best metal to ever come out of Sweden. Even the mighty Deathspell Omega paid homage with their track "Malign Paradigm" on SMRC (listen to that track alongside "Ashes and Bloodstench".)

I can't find a single fault on any of the six tracks. The guitarwork, drumming, and compositions are stunning and I can't think of any word to describe Nord's vocals other than godlike. He truly commands attention from the first lyric to the last. Not only that, but you can understand what he's saying unlike many black metal vocalists who rely upon sheer aggression to get their message across. The lyrical content is not exactly deep or philosophical, but is convincingly intelligent. Above all, in a sea of inbred, homogenized black metal, Malign has a unique sound and vision that should be explored further.

The production is superb. Each instrument can be heard clearly and nothing overpowers the rest of the mix. The "Fireborn" portion is a bit more raw than "Divine Facing", but is clear enough to avoid complaint. In particular, the guitar tone is immense.

If I really had to choose something to complain about, it would be the shortage of new material. I would rape, murder and pillage for a Malign full-length. Seeing as that has little to do with the EP in question, I have no choice but to give this a 100%. If you buy any "older" album this year, make it this one. You won't be disappointed.
