1950 års fotbolls-VM i Brasilien. USA är inbjudet. Men i USA spelar de ju inte fotboll. Där spelar de ju bara basket, ishockey, baseboll och amerikansk fotboll. Ett fotbollslag sätts dock snabbt ihop och de beger sig till fotbolls-VM. Där får de möta världens bästa fotbollsnation, England. Det kan ju bara sluta på ett sätt... eller?

Based on a true story, The Game of Their Lives follows the US soccer team who passionately proved that even an underdog can have what it takes to be a winner, against all odds.

In the spring of 1950, the United States is extended an invitation to compete in the World Cup in Brazil. Faced with budgetary restrictions and no official soccer team to call their own, the U.S. sets out to recruit players in the soccer hotbed of St. Louis, Missouri, where they find a group of young friends with no professional or international playing experience, only an unabashed love of the game. Leaving behind their wives, girlfriends and families to join selected other players in New York for a 10-day training period, these young men are forced to see past one another's differences to become a full-fledged team.
