Aka
A Doll's House (1973) by Henrik Ibsen

Optional subtitles in separate idx/sub files:
English, Norwegian
(Subtitles will work in newer standalone DivX players, see enclosed Notes.)

With Lise Fjeldstad (Nora Helmer)
Knut Risan (Torvald Helmer)

Ibsen's classic drama in its original language. I thought I would have to wait for a rerun on TV to record and rip, but then I incidentally came across this old, unknown DVD edition in a public library. And behold: It has English subtitles!

This is the 1973 TV recording which has been passed down as the most accurate interpretation to us Norwegians. It must have been one of the first color productions by the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK), and the quality is surprisingly good for a 35 year old recording.

Original fullscreen 608x432, COLOR, mono sound.
DVDrip 2-pass Xvid
Burn tested, runs well in both my standalone DivX players.

Ibsen went himself to Germany to oversee the production of the stage play there, only to be met with fierce opposition by the leading actress, who refused to perform the play with its original ending. A wife simply DID NOT leave her children and her husband at that time! Ibsen had to comply and write another ending for the German public. For the same reasons, the play was originally banned in Britain by the Lord Chamberlain under the 1737 licensing act.

Therefore, it would have been very interesting to see Werner Fassbinders German version, uploaded here in May but never seeded:

Norwegian actress Liv Ullman worked for more than five years with her dream to direct a Norwegian-based, international production in English of this celebrated play. Actor candidates were Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchett, Annette Bening and Ralph Fiennes, and the filming was planned to be set in Ã…lesund. The project was officially buried in January 2007 due to animosity and lack of support in the funding process.
Liv Ullmann actually made her Broadway stage debut in "A Doll's House" in 1975.

Further Ibsen plays available in the same series:
En Folkefiende (An Enemy of the People) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0447638/
Fru Inger til Østråt (Lady Inger of Oestraat) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073021/

Rosmersholm https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0282925/
Vildanden (The Wild Duck) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0283120/

I may consider uploading some of them, pending the reaction to this upload.

Liberaladvocate, thank you for the superlatives, but I don't understand your suggestion. This IS already converted to the DivX format (.avi file), and the separate subs (when unpacked and found in the same folder, as instructed in my Notes) already work in all newer standalone DivX players.
But by all means, do whatever you want with the rip if you can find seeders for the result. I am just happy that people get a chance to enjoy this version, which has not been marketed or commercially distributed.
I totally disagree with you liberaladvocate!
I want to choose my own subtitle language and I very much appreciate the effort Kuthumi takes to rip all the available subtitles from a dvd and share them.

And in this case ... do Norwegian want English subtitles when they're watching a movie in their native language? I don't think so.
As I have explained, this version as-is plays with or without subtitles in both my standalone DivX players of different makes. If you don't want subs, just copy the avi file as usual. If you want subtitles, unpack the variant you want into the same folder as the avi file. Copy the FOLDER with the avi and 2 sub files unto an USB memory stick or a data DVD.
(Some DivX players have difficulties with subs from USB sticks, but manage well when they are on a data DVD.)
You only need to convert to DVD (vob) format if your standalone DVD player does not accept DivX, or if you want to give a copy to a friend who might not have this facility.
My experience is that most users here use WMP which is not good at choosing language tracks or embedded subtitles. Most other players are easier.
Anyhow, Liberaladvocate's version with the embedded (means not burned-in, can be chosen and turned on or off) subtitles is up at https://piratebayproxy.live/torrent/4460520/
Have a good Ibsen evening!
