Brazil (1985) Director: Terry Gilliam Screenplay: Terry Gilliam & Tom Stoppard Genre: SF, Drama, Fantasy Plot: Brazil is a darkly comic Science Fiction film starring Jonathan Pryce as "Sam Lowry"—a low level bureaucrat in a dystopian society, who becomes an enemy of the state after discovering an error in the system. Though the film is an original story conceived by director Terry Gilliam with Charles McKeown and the playwright Tom Stoppard, it bears the strong influence of sci fi author Phillip K. Dick. The film was not considered a success upon its theatrical release (it barely broke even), but it has endured as a cult classic, standing with 1981's Time Bandits as one of Gilliam's most acclaimed efforts. Robert De Niro guest stars in the film as an anarchist plumber named Tuttle.
