=============================================================

Sandy Hurvitz a.k.a. Essra Mohawk was only 16 when she released a single, “ The Boy With The Way” on Liberty Records in 1964. She eventually found her “way” to New York in 1967 and became part of the Mothers Of Invention’s shows at the Garrick Theater performing as “Uncle Meat”,(she was also the Mothers’ cover artist Cal Schenkel’s girlfriend at this time).

While in the company of Frank Zappa, she was signed to his new Bizarre Productions and Zappa began to produce her album with backing from the Mothers Of Invention, but during recording, a rift developed between Sandy and Frank, and Zappa handed production duties over to Ian Underwood, the result was a record sounding more like that of a demo recording, though still quite powerful in an artistic way (Somewhere hidden away in the vaults is a recording of “Arch Godliness Of Purplefull Magic” with backing by the Mothers from the original sessions).

With Underwood taking charge, he assembled some well known jazz musicians to back Sandy up on a few of the songs, including Jeremy Steig (flute), Jim Pepper (tenor sax), Donald McDonald (drums), and Eddie Gomez (bass).

After her stint with the Mothers, Sandy, now known as Essra Mohawk moved on to California and recorded the magnificent “Primordial Lovers” album for Reprise Records, the album was produced by her then husband Frazier Mohawk, Frazier around this time was involved with the West Coast group Rhinoceros, which Essra nearly joined. The album featured some of Rhinoceros’ members including Doug Hastings, Danny Weis, and Jerry Penrod. Also appearing on the lp was CSN&Y drummer Dallas Taylor.

Essra would go on to release a few more albums through the 70s and also did session work as a back-up singer for the likes of Carol King, John Mellancamp, and also performing with the Jerry Garcia Band, she also has done work for television (Schoolhouse Rock) and wrote Cyndi Lauper’s hit “Change Of Heart”.

In 1993 Essra moved to Nashville and has since released a number of albums, and is still very much a part of the musicical scene there.
