i downloaded this and its a zip file and when i unzip it comes out to be several files, how do i restore this to my ipod 2g? i am in dfu mode and attempting to restore the same way via option click the restore button

If you are using Mac OS X, Mac OS X unzips the IPSW too. :(

yes i am on mac os 10.5.6 and when i unzip it i get a folder called iPod2,1_3.0_7A238j_Restore with these files inside: Restore.plist, kernelcache.release.s5l8720x, a folder called Firmware, BuildSubmission.plist, 018-4799-1.dmg, 018-4797-1.dmg, and 018-4796-1.dmg. I think its unzipping the ipsw from the zip then unzipping the ipsw itself into its parts.

You MUST have an iPhone 3G registered as a developer handset, otherwise after upgrade your phone will get stuck at the emergency screen, add to that You CANNOT downgrade back to 2.2.1 once upgraded to 3.0, Use at your own risk !

If there was no UDID for iPod Touch models, then developers would have no way to securely test applications on that platform- that's the point of the UDID, and the reason why Apple is using that facility for this.

It's very easy to use the bypass technique. Just turn off your internet. This DOES work, but it IS glitchy. Certain apps like Pandora, YouTube, and Google Maps don't work yet. Thanks for the leak though! It is pretty cool to have shake to shuffle and bluetooth capabilities.

This does not really need to be added to a Developer account. All you need to do is disconnect from the internet before syncing. (iPod Touch Models) for the iPhone 3G, beware, as you are also upgrading your baseband, will be stuck on 3.0 until june, with no way to downgrade the baseband.

sellout281, you're saying that just by blocking itunes it will work, but then I won't be able to use iTunes Store on the computer right? I mean, I'm blocking the internet connection, to iTunes. And, does anyone know if I can downgrade from 3.0 to 2.2.1 or 2.2 so I can later upgrade to 2.2.1 again on my second gen iPod Touch? I just want to try it really.

No wait. I mean the issue with the iPhone is that the baseband also gets an update and can't be unlocked yet. And that's why you can't downgrade, but iPod Touch should be able to downgrade then. Please answer because I don't want to risk it.

could just be me but i needed to upgrade to the itunes 8.2 beta in order to transfer my files to my ipod because 8.1 just gave me errors. :| and yes this is on 3.0 and yes you can restore it to 2.2.1 (done i myself :D)

mac users: when unzipping, watch the app.
itll unzip it, then extract the ispw
hit cancel on the ispw extraction and itll leave you with the file you need

I installed this, and now my 2nd gen touch will not turn on. I tried forced recovery mode, and two different computers too.

Ok, after about 15 minutes, the ipod just DECIDED to turn back on. *rolleyes* Anyways, it's in recovery mode, and i'm getting an error from itunes: iTunes could not connect to this iPod because an unknown error occurred (0xE800005D). Gonna restore and install again, then post results. :/

hey all of you that are getting the blocked error message and cannot restore ipod.
1.) This firmware will no longer work for ipod touch
2.) To restore you must put the iPod in DFW mode, hold power for 2 seconds, without releasing the power button hold the home button for 10 seconds, then release the power button and keep the home button down until it appears on itunes.
