It happens to be Leonard's favorite book of the books he has written. The title comes from the famous Spencer Williams song. He has been commended by critics for his gritty realism and strong dialogue. His writing style sometimes takes liberties with grammar in the interest of speeding along the story. In his essay, "Elmore Leonard's Ten Rules of Writing," he writes, "My most important rule is one that sums up the 10: If it sounds like writing, I rewrite it." His advice to writers also includes the hint, "Try to leave out the part that readers tend to skip." From Recorded Books: The tremendously popular novels of Elmore Leonard are the standard all other humorous crime writing is measured against. In the tradition of New York Times best-sellers like Be Cool and Out of Sight, Tishomingo Blues is a witty masterpiece. Enter Dennis Lenahan, the coolest guy ever to earn his living by diving 80 feet into a nine-foot-deep tank. But even high-diving hipsters can get mixed up with the wrong people, as Dennis does when he witnesses the Dixie Mafia carry out a murder. Throw in a slick con man from Detroit, a crooked sheriff and other oddballs...then let the action climax at a Civil War reenactment...and this book is vintage, laugh-out-loud Leonard. With the colorful characters and unpredictable plot twists that are his trademarks, Leonard has crafted another truly unique tale. Master narrator Frank Muller is a perfect match for the crackling dialog. - Audie Award Winner - AudioFile Earphones Award - A New York Times Notable Book of the Year
