Converting solar energy to electricity via photovoltaic cells is one of the most
exciting and practical scientific discoveries of the last several hundred years. The use of solar power is far less damaging to the environment than burning fossil fuels to generate power. In comparison to other renewable energy resources such as hydro power, wind, and geothermal, solar has unmatched portability and thus flexibility. The sun shines everywhere. These characteristics make solar power a key energy source as we move away from our fossil fuel dependency, and toward more sustainable and clean ways to meet our energy needs.

The sun is a powerful energy resource. Although very little of the billions of
megawatts per second generated by the sun reaches our tiny Earth, there is
more than enough to be unlimited in potential for terrestrial power production.
The sunlight that powers solar cells travels through space at 186,282 miles per
hour to reach the earth 8.4 minutes after leaving the surface of the sun. About
1,368 W/M2 is released at the top of the earth’s atmosphere. Although the solar
energy that reaches the Earth’s surface is reduced due to water vapor, ozone
layer absorption and scattering by air molecules, there is still plenty of power for us to collect. Harvesting photons for use in homes, factories, offices, vehicles and personal electronics has become practical, and economical, and will continue to increase in its importance in the energy supply equation.

In my opinion, the most exciting aspect of photovoltaic power generation is
that it creates opportunities for the individual power consumer to be involved in the production of power. Even if it is only in a small way, you can have some control of where your energy comes from.
Almost anyone can set up a solar panel and use the power – independent of
the grid and other “powers that be.” Batteries and super capacitors for the electronic devices that we use on a daily basis can be recharged by this natural and renewable energy resource. Doing so cuts down on pollution and makes life better for everyone.Practically every aspect of our lives will be touched in a positive way by the increasing use of solar electric power.

Its just a book about building a Solar panel. Don't be a noob. Can you tell me exactly how much energy the sun puts out per second? I don't think so. Its not referring to how much hits the earth.

I havn't downloaded the e-book yet, but I qute sure it's not about flickering a gizmo in your kitchen that can produce "billions of megawatts per second". But maybe instead a little solarpanel that can produce some small amount of electricity for your gadgets (ipod,iphone,small windmill ect.)

...how stupid can you get?! Do you even know how much a megawatt is? A fossil fuel power plant generates 1.000MW++ (depends on which power plant you're referring to, of course).
the sun is 1.300.000 times larger than the earth.
Don't you think such a giant power generator burning at 15 MILLION degrees celsius would make billions of megawatts?

A watt is a unit of power defined to be a joule of energy per second of its use. A watt per second is a unit measuring the rate of change of power output with respect to time, not a unit of power. That's a _huge_ difference.
How do you output quadrillions of joules every second ... every second?

Billions of megawatts may be generated by the sun, but billions of megawatts *per second* doesn't make sense. Any measure of the sun's megawatt/second output will average very close to zero.
so the fact that there is a password was never mentioned. how about you guys keep you egotistical arguments somewhere else
I just opened it and there was no password for me. I see this was written in 2006. Is it outdated or pretty much up to date?

Tell that to my electric company that bills me by the KILOWATT HOUR - which is 3.26 megajoules, FYI.
Other than that one disputed sentence, the math in the book looks sound. Its a book on how to build your own solar panels from individual solar cells. There is ample info on suppliers, calculations, soldering, layout, etc. Despite what you may think, it is possible to save a considerable amount of money by building panels yourself.

You realise this agrees entirely with what themaelstroms has said, right?

1 kilowatt hour = 1kW * h
If W = J/s
Therefore 1kW * h = 1000J / s * 3600s

This is because there are 3600 seconds in an hour. Now we can cancel out the two "seconds":

1kW * h = 3600000J = 3.6MJ (not 3.26MJ)
I feel like im in class reading all this comments ahahhaha
