His 1951 debut, the pulp paperback novel Hill Girl, sold over a million copies. Older brother Lee, charming and dissipated, is married and still lives in the town. Lee becomes obsessed with a teenager, Angelina, and they begin an affair. Eventually her father finds out, gets a gun, and goes looking for Lee. To prevent his brother's murder, Bob tells Angelina's father that he, not Lee, is Angelina's lover and volunteers to marry her. They marry and eventually come to love each other. But Lee is still obsessed with Angelina and won't leave her alone, setting up the climactic confrontation.
