Koyaanisqatsi is a 1982 film directed by Godfrey Reggio with music composed by Philip Glass and cinematography by Ron Fricke.

The film consists primarily of slow motion and time-lapse photography of cities and many natural landscapes across the United States. The visual tone poem contains neither dialogue nor a vocalized narration: its tone is set by the juxtaposition of images and music. In the Hopi language, the word Koyaanisqatsi means 'crazy life, life in turmoil, life out of balance, life disintegrating, a state of life that calls for another way of living', and the film implies that modern humanity is living in such a way. The film is the first in the Qatsi trilogy of films: it is followed by Powaqqatsi (1988) and Naqoyqatsi (2002). The trilogy depicts different aspects of the relationship between humans, nature, and technology. Koyaanisqatsi is the best known of the trilogy and is considered a cult film.

This release is the original DVD from Reggio's Institute for Regional Education. Unlike the later release from MGM, which had the top and bottom sections of the print removed to fit the widescreen format, the IRE version is an open matte transfer in 4:3 and is thus more true to the original film format.

whoever was behind the original upload, you are a SAINT! i have tried tracking down used VHS and laserdisc releases of this just to get the non-mutilated picture. it makes SO MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE! it is very clearly what the filmmakers intended the picture to look like when it was originally made. screw you MGM!
Yep, this is THE version to have. It's excellent, and the only way to see it. Thanks for keeping it alive!
Thanks for this!
Also available in PAL format (Region 2, Europe, Australia, etc): https://piratebayproxy.live/torrent/6146362
This is indeed the best version, the others have been cropped in top and bottom and gives a much more "zoomed in" and confuzing composition.

I downloaded 3 versions to compare side by side. This one is the best.
i really want this version to get the unedited video. i DLed it and tried to play it in VLC uninterrupted. it come in 6 playable TS files. i load them into the VLC playlist and it has to skip to the next one after each one plays. this hinders my experience more then cropping. any suggestions?
Salamat!
DL speed is soooo low. Greedy capitalists.
Thanks so much for this. So far ahead of its time, everyone should watch this incredible piece. The filmaker Fricke is a genius, so is Philip Glass.
Hail to open matte! Best we will get until It's on Bluray in this aspect ratio.
Thanks a lot. DL was slow, but not terribly so.
The other versions are cropped to fit the 16:9 aspect ratio. The IRE version shows the full screen, as in the 1.33:1 theatrical version, at a smaller resolution (something like 720x540). Quality is pretty good, though.
Screen caps comparing this to the HDTV version:

This in Blu-ray and my life is complete, I don't need anything else!
I just registered in order to thanks the uploader.
This is the best version ever of this brillant movie.
PAL version ??? I suppose it will look a little better ... ^^ :)
Great news, Koyaanisqatsi fans!

It's coming out fully restored on blu-ray as a Criterion release on December 11th 2012, along with the other two 'quatsi' films.

To end the debate once and for all about which aspect ratio is correct, it's coming out in 'director approved' 4:3. This is, the open matte ratio as per the IRE edition.

Sadly for those outside the USA, as it's Criterion, it's only a region 'A' release. And they wonder why people rip stuff and 'pirate' it. Idiots.
@sos_pb
Wrong. :(

Screen caps of all 3 releases, IRE, MGM, and the latest Criterion BR release. Seems to be in 1.85:1 format, almost the same as the cropped MGM version. Now we can all watch a better, higher quality cropped version.
