Ugly House To Lovely House: Series 1 George Clarke and leading architects show that even the ugliest house can be transformed into a home to be proud of, proving that great design doesn't have to cost the earth Glamorgan Beginning with the 1970s home of Tony and Sarah in the Vale of Glamorgan. The couple want rid of the pebbledash facade, small windows and dated decor, to create a great family home on a relatively modest budget of £60,000. They receive some bespoke and cutting-edge input from commercial and residential architect Greg Blee, with a plan that will link their home to the landscape beyond, including a Shard-like extension Berkshire Architect Ed Lipton renovates a house for a couple who moved in nine years ago for £220,000, but with two young sons are fast outgrowing the property and cannot afford to move. Ed's bold ideas are held up by planning problems and once the build starts, Rachel and James agree to move out so progress can be quicker, but it has to be completed in just eight weeks. Knocking down the garage and replacing it with a dramatic, double-height extension to give the living space a real sense of drama is one of the potential solutions, although the budget of £60,000 is set to test Ed's skill to the limit. Hertfordshire Sue and Simon bought their four-bedroom Hertfordshire home in 2014, but the fake-Victorian extension has given the property a bad layout which is proving something of a nightmare. The couple also believe their home is by far the ugliest on their street. Enter architect Laura Jane Clark, who specialises in breathing new life into unappealing spaces. She has a plan to entirely transform the interior by moving the staircase, putting in skylights and installing an innovative revolving wall. However, Sue and Simon have a tight budget of £50,000 - and that's before they've even started on the exterior. Sussex Tammy and Stuart live in a pretty village in West Sussex but their bungalow is outdated, with its main living rooms starved of light. The couple are desperate to create a family home but their options are severely limited. Enter architect Will Alsop, who designs a dramatic barrel-vaulted extension to the rear of the bungalow, complete with specially constructed exposed curved beams, an aluminium roof and porthole windows. It's certainly an audacious design - but what will the neighbours think? Croydon Award-winning architect Jo Cowen, who has worked on projects including the British Museum and the JP Morgan tower at Canary Wharf, is called in to help Croydon couple Denise and Ali breathe new life into their uninspiring council house. She plans a striking glazed extension, and comes up with a further idea for the upstairs that requires an extra £40,000 on top of the not inconsiderable £120,000 budget. But problems begin to appear, pushing the couple to the brink
