Here is Olivier Messiaen's harrowing Quartet for the End of Time (1940) as well as Messiaen's Theme and Variations for piano and violin (1932). Quartet for the End of Time was written in a war camp using the only four instruments available to Messiaen. It was premiered in the same camp in January 1941. Powerful stuff.
