Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie - Novels, Stories and Essays (14 books)

CHIMAMANDA NGOZI ADICHIE (b. 1977) is a critically acclaimed Nigerian writer whose works range from novels to short stories to non-fiction. She was described in The TLS as "the most prominent" of a "procession of critically acclaimed young anglophone authors [who] is succeeding in attracting a new generation of readers to African literature". Adichie divides her time between the U.S. and Nigeria, where she teaches writing workshops.

Her first novel, PURPLE HIBISCUS (2003), is the coming-of-age story of a 15-year-old Nigerian girl whose family is wealthy and well respected but who is terrorized by her fanatically religious father. The book was short-listed for the Orange Prize, and won both the 2005 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best First Book (Africa) and Best First Book (overall).

HALF OF A YELLOW SUN (2006), set before and during the Nigerian Civil War, is the story of Biafra, the short-lived secessionist republic in Igboland. It was described in a 2018 New Yorker profile (included here) as "a story of symphonic complexity, with characters from all over Nigeria and many levels of society, twisted together by love and the chance encounters of refugees." It received the 2007 Orange Prize for Fiction and was adapted into a feature film of the same title directed by Biyi Bandele (2014).

AMERICANAH (2013), her third novel, centres on the struggles of a young Nigerian woman studying in the U.S. Adichie's description of the disorientation and cruelties experienced by young Nigerians living abroad won the National Book Critics' Circle Award.

THE THING AROUND YOUR NECK (2009) is an acclaimed collection of short stories that explore the relationships between men and women, parents and children, Africa and the United States.

Adichie said in a 2014 interview: "I think of myself as a storyteller but I would not mind at all if someone were to think of me as a feminist writer... I'm very feminist in the way I look at the world, and that world view must somehow be part of my work."

Her non-fiction includes WE SHOULD ALL BE FEMINISTS (2014), an essay adapted from a TED Talk in 2012, parts of which were distributed to every sixteen-year-old in Sweden and sampled in a Beyoncé music video. DEAR IJEAWELE, OR A FEMINIST MANIFESTO IN FIFTEEN SUGGESTIONS (2017) was Adichie's response to a new mother who asked how to empower a daughter to become a strong, independent woman.

Her most recent book, NOTES ON GRIEF (2021), is a work of meditation, remembrance, and hope, written following the death of her father the previous year.
