The ghosts of Euler, Gauss, and Riemann may give Marsden's textbook a Pass but if the goal is to actually learn and appreciate Vector Calculus, as opposed to engaging in a slavish ordeal of mathematical pedantry, then I would have to give this textbook a big, fat Fail.
Instead of this textbook, I recommend Stewart's Multivariable Calculus textbook or Thomas's 1200 page tome. Both do a pretty decent job at providing you with the joyous pleasure of learning about vector calc - [rfor what it's worth, I prefer Stewart's]. There's NO joyous pleasure in Marsden. In fact, I've heard rumors that Satan uses Marsden to torture Hell's captives.
