When it was released in 1956, this movie opened the world's eyes to live under the sea and introduced us to Jacques Cousteau.What's seen in the film is tame by modern standards (i.e. Cameron's "Ghost of the Abyss"). SCUBA gear was new to the public when Costeau made the film and his divers didn't go very deep. Still the film has had tremendous impact over the years. Together with the "Silent Spring" it pretty much started the ecology movement. Happily the color footage has held up well and looks great in HD.
