Joanna Eberhart (Nicole Kidman) is een succesvolle baas van een televisie 
station. Wanneer zij wordt ontslagen, stort Joanna in. Haar man Walter 
(Matthew Broderick) staat erop te verhuizen van Manhattan naar het chique 
en moderne Stepford in Connecticut. Daar aangekomen, wordt Joanna goede 
vrienden met Bobbie Markowitz (Bette Midler), een joodse schrijfster en 
herstellend alcoholiste. Ze komen er tot hun ergernis achter dat alle 
huisvrouwen in Stepford eng zijn in hun perfectie. Joanna en Bobbie vragen 
zich af wat er gebeurt achter de gesloten deuren van de Stepford Men's 
Association. Waarom is alles zo perfect in Stepford? En zal het al te laat 
zijn wanneer ze achter de schokkende waarheid komen?

'The Stepford Wives' is gebaseerd op het gelijknamige boek van Ira Levin 
('Rosemary's Baby', 'A Kiss Before Dying'), waarvan in 1975 al eerder een 
verfilming van verscheen. Regisseur Frank Oz (bekend van de Muppets en 
Yoda uit Star Wars) en scriptschrijver Paul Rudnick geven echter hun eigen 
draai aan het origineel, zodat deze nieuwe versie eerder een zwarte 
muzikale komedie is dan een science-fiction thriller. Oz ('The Score') 
heeft een aantal grote namen uit Hollywood weten te strikken: Nicole 
Kidman, Bette Midler, Matthew Broderick, Christopher Walken en Glenn Close 
nemen rollen voor hun rekening. Maar de lange opnameperiode eiste zijn 
tol: de regisseur was na drie maanden een inzinking nabij.

"The Stepford Wives" is based on the novel by Ira Levin ("Rosemary's 
Baby," "A Kiss Before Dying"), which in 1975 already appeared in a film. 
Director Frank Oz (of the Muppets and Yoda from Star Wars) and 
screenwriter Paul Rudnick however give their own twist on the original, so 
this new version rather than a black musical comedy is a science fiction 
thriller. Oz ('The Score') has some big names from Hollywood managed to 
snare: Nicole Kidman, Bette Midler, Matthew Broderick, Christopher Walken 
and Glenn Close taking roles on their behalf. But the long recording 
period took its toll: the director was after three months a near 
depression.
