The Animal Crackers, De Band Zonder Stekkers ( = The Band without plugs ) is as going back in time. The Animal Crackers, popular during the 1970s in The Netherlands, played their own music. tunes from the 1920s, added with their own Dutch lyrics in a hilarious live show and their performances were always like a great party.
They were founded in 1971 by a group musicians, like Herman Openneer (nicknamed Jan Ribbel as he played the washboard), Ré Gruetters and Dick Turksma, joined by Etienne François and Gijs Horstink, all part of the Amsterdam Traditional Jazz scene.
They were extremely sucesfull with their band. A 1976 review of one of their concerts reads: The RTCB ( = Roaring Twenties Club Breda) venue was jam-packed with fans, who wanted to see and hear it with their own eyes and ears. They were not disappointed - The Animal Crackers were in top form. In my remembrance, the Animal Crackers were top-of-the-bill for decades, but the band only lasted six years: in 1977 the members decided to stop it. The Animal Crackers - De Band Zonder Stekkers released three LPs.
This is a hilarious compilation with known 1920s tunes and crazy lyrics in the Dutch language. A lot of people will remember the lyrics of Ruitenheer (originally George Formby's When I'm Cleaning Windows );

Glazenwasser is mijn beroep Ik zet m'n ladder op de stoep En klim naar boven, een, twee hoog En ik ga glazen wassen .............. zo uit het raam te plassen.

And i'm sure that a lot of Dutchmen who have heard this band playing remember ...

Door een kamerbrede woestijn, tot de nok gevuld met zand, trekt een karavaan met sprongen voorwaarts. (Zand in zand kameraden, zand in zand voor Feye...) De hete woestijnwind giert om de tochtige hoeken van eeuwenoude piramides, dat het een lieve lust is. De temperatuur is opgelopen tot een hitte van een zandstraalkachel, en het beetje water dat de eenzame ruiters nog hebben is brak en lauw. ...'s Avonds als de zon in het zand zakt en Klaas Vaak de mannen zand in de ogen komt strooien en een diepe rust de stilte verstoort, dromen de mannen van de koningin der woestijn. Faisah!!
