Textbook in PDF format The Frontal Lobes updates readers on the latest thinking on the structure and function of the human frontal lobe. Sections address methodology, anatomy, physiology and pharmacology, function, development, aging and disorders, and rehabilitation. Patients with focal lesions in the frontal lobes have long been studied to reveal the organization and function of the frontal lobes. Over the last two decades, studies of patients with neurodegenerative diseases and developmental disorders have increased, with new findings discussed in this volume. In addition, the book includes discussions on genetics and molecular biology, optogenetics, high-resolution structural and functional neuroimaging and electrophysiology, and more. Lastly, new knowledge on the biology, structure and function of the frontal lobes, new treatment targets for pharmacology, non-invasive brain stimulation, and cognitive/social remediation are presented. The last section covers new efforts that will hopefully lead to better outcomes in patients with frontal lobe disorders. Foreword Preface Contributors History The prefrontal cortex in the neurology clinic Methods The functions of the frontal lobes: Evidence from patients with focal brain damage Cognitive neurophysiology of the prefrontal cortex Functional imaging Transcranial magnetic stimulation: Neurophysiological and clinical applications Anatomy, physiology and pharmacology The anatomy of the human frontal lobe Dopamine and the motivation of cognitive control Function of the frontal lobes Frontal lobe syndromes Hierarchical cognitive control and the frontal lobes Hemispheric asymmetry in the prefrontal cortex for complex cognition Executive functions The lateral prefrontal cortex and human long-term memory From ideas to action: The prefrontal–premotor connections that shape motor behavior Emotion regulation across the life span Reward Moral conduct and social behavior Computational models of motivated frontal function Control networks of the frontal lobes Development, aging, and disorders Development of the frontal lobe Aging of the frontal lobe Neurodegenerative disorders of the human frontal lobes Traumatic brain injury and frontal lobe plasticity Rehabilitation Strengthening goal-directed functioning after traumatic brain injury Experimental social training methods Plasticity and recovery of function Index
