This 1984 Bollywood drama revolves around people living in slums and their struggles to earn a livelihood to feed their families. It narrates the story of Janki who meets Purushottam, a wealthy truck driver. Purushottam, who is completely smitten by Janki, starts showering her with expensive gifts and money. Their closeness leads to their physical intimacy and soon trouble begins to brew. Janki learns that Purushottam is married, she decides to stops seeing him. One day, Janki's mother commits suicide after she learns about Janki's immoral act fearing society and people. Soon, Janki gets pregnant, but refuses to reveals the identity of the father. The rest of plot reveals what destiny has in store for Janki and her child and also demonstrates how women from lower societies are exploited by upperclass men for money. Starring Raj Babbar, Smita Patil, Tanuja, Aruna Irani, Moushumi Chatterjee, Amitabh Bachchan, Amjad Khan, Tanuja, Sulabha Deshpande, Mehmood, Vinod Mehra, and Mukri, the film is directed by Durai and the music is composed by Bappi Lahiri. 

This film is prophetic of Smita Patil's death. In the film, Smita goes into labour and is rushed to hospital. Moushami exhorts Babbar to do his duty for his lover. There is news that she has developed a high fever. Babbar is running around on the streets when someone accosts and informs him of her death. He turns to the side of the street and bursts into tears. Lying on the ground is Smita's bedecked body, her newborn son wailing besides her.
The same sequence would play out in Smita's life two years later when she developed post-pregnancy complications and a high fever, was rushed to hospital and died, leaving behind her newborn son.
