Virgínia, 1931. Howard (Jason Clarke), o irmão do meio, é o membro mais violento e leal da família. O seu bom senso dissolve-se regularmente no álcool que não consegue recusar. Forrest (Tom Hardy), o mais velho, é o chefe do grupo e continua determinado em proteger a sua família das novas regras impostas por um novo mundo económico.
