Overview
The companion to the Showtime documentary series, director Oliver Stone and historian Peter Kuznick challenge the prevailing orthodoxies of traditional history books in this thoroughly researched and rigorously analyzed look at the dark side of American history.

“At last the world knows America as the savior of the world!”—Woodrow Wilson

The notion of American exceptionalism, dating back to John Winthrop’s 1630 sermon aboard the Arbella, still warps Americans’ understanding of their nation’s role in the world. Most are loathe to admit that the United States has any imperial pretensions. But history tells a different story as filmmaker Oliver Stone and historian Peter Kuznick reveal in this riveting account of the rise and decline of the American empire.

Aided by the latest archival findings and recently declassified documents and building on the research of the world’s best scholars, Stone and Kuznick construct an often shocking but meticulously documented “People’s History of the American Empire” that offers startling context to the Bush-Cheney policies that put us at war in two Muslim countries and show us why the Obama administration has had such a difficult time cleaving a new path.

Stone and Kuznick will introduce readers to a pantheon of heroes and villains as they show not only how far the United States has drifted from its democratic traditions, but the powerful forces that have struggled to get us back on track.

American leaders often believe they are unbound by history, yet Stone and Kuznick argue that we must face our troubling history honestly and forthrightly in order to set a new course for the twenty-first century. Their conclusions will challenge even experts, but there is one question only readers can answer: Is it too late for America to change?

Kirkus Reviews
Zinn-ian conspiracy theories, propounded engagingly and energetically by filmmaker and gadfly Stone and Cold War scholar Kuznick (History/American Univ.). If you've read Howard Zinn--or if, like Jeff Lebowski, the Port Huron Statement is still current news for you--then you'll have at least some of the outlines of this overstuffed argument. Premise 1: Though the United States may pretend to be a nice, cuddly sort of democracy, it's the font of much trouble in the world. Premise 2: When, post-9/11, neocons began pondering why it wouldn't be such a bad idea for the U.S. to become an imperial power, they were missing a train (or Great White Fleet) that had pulled out of the station long ago. Premise 3: We like European fascists better than Asian fascists, as evidenced by propaganda posters depicting our erstwhile Japanese foes as rats and vermin. Premise 4: War is a racket that benefits only the ruling class. Premise 5: JFK knew more than he had a chance to make public, and he was gunned down for his troubles. And so forth. Layered in with these richly provocative (and eminently arguable) theses are historical aperçus and data that don't figure in most standard texts--e.g., the showdown between Bernard Baruch and Harry Truman ("in a colossal failure of presidential leadership") that could only lead to a protracted struggle between the U.S. and the Soviet Union for post–World War II dominance. Some familiar villains figure in as well, notably the eminently hissable Henry Kissinger and his pal Augusto Pinochet; the luster of others whom we might want to think of as good guys dims (George H.W. Bush in regard to Gorbachev), while other bad guys (George W. Bush in regard to Saddam Hussein) get worse. Preaching to the choir, perhaps, but an invigorating sermon all the same.

Thank you! Welcome to the other side of reality. Things aren't always as they have been presented.
"Thank you! Welcome to the other side of reality. Things aren't always as they have been presented."

Oh, BS. Read the Kirkus review above, it nails this. I teach history. For any even semi-serious student, this stuff isn't news, and the presentation is HIGHLY questionable. I offer the torrent because it is historical, not because I support it. Stone's entire approach to history is asking someone to accept a biased far-fetched theory, and then basing multiple other theories upon those. Fans of this kind of thinking have agendas, and those agendas are not truth-at-all-costs, but as weakly political as the ones they decry.
share it all, support what u believe
Thanxx rambam1776 .

I was surprised to see that you u/l this but then saw your comment. Stone is an idiot at best and at worst...the list is long.
Kudos on your love of learning and free speech.
Well, this kind of writing, as absolutely TYPIFIED by Howard Zinn's dreadful polemic "The People's History..." is really more a history of an ideology than even an attempt at objectivity. Writing history without bias is impossible, but simply announcing one's bias at the start and blathering on (Zinn, Michael Moore, Joseph Goebbels, et al) is no more laudatory. Zinn once even wrote a book (which my college teachers INSISTED I read) called "You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train", about why his approach was acceptable and superior. I say it is neither.

Good historians - be they left or right wing - should treat historical fact and analysis like a scientist treats data. If the discovered results don't support the original hypothesis, they must change their minds. Far too many ignore "inconvenient truths" in order to hold extant beliefs. Still, this book is not a lie, merely full of slanted conclusions and omissions. It also dwells greatly on issues that standard texts gloss over, such as American military adventures in Central America. Since it represents the thinking of so many people, it is worth examination, if not acceptance. Freedom of Speech is tough; even *I* have to accept stuff like this if I want to see stuff that I *DO* agree with made available. Finally, how much learning would I do if I only read things that reinforced my existing beliefs?
I hope it was clear that I was not being sarcastic when I wrote Kudos etc.
You are one of the superior uploaders on the Bay.
Nikko - No, I didn't think you were being rude. I just felt the topic deserved a little more explanation. A lot of folks are trapped into thinking that THEIR side is clearly right, and the other side is full of lock-step idiots. As a conservative libertarian, I DON'T think Democrats are fools. Much of their thinking is just fine. It also doesn't help that the most prominent conservatives of the last decade have been ridiculous.

To any liberal reading this - *I* don't want to be judged by Bush or Limbaugh. Do *YOU* want to be judged by Pelosi or Reid?
Thanks rambam1776 for the torrent and your ability to offer something that you may not even necessarily agree with.

As to my comment on "the other side of reality", I merely meant that the public is often shown only one side, the pretty side, of our history - not that this portrayal is a particularly enlightening exercise in that regard.

At least the myth that the Americans were THE savior of the world (delivering it from Hitler) was put into a appropriate perspective, given the Soviet's extreme sacrifices and overall contribution to that effort.

Giving the Soviet's (and even Stalin) their just credit is just one example of a correction to common belief that constitutes "the other side of reality". And it doesn't diminish the American, British, or any other Allies efforts to demonstrate that correction.

There are lots of not-so-little errors, exaggerations, and omissions that have been glossed over in our common understanding of who we are and what we did or didn't do. That's one not so insignificant reason that many Americans have come to think of themselves as being somehow superior to other peoples and nations, and tend to behave that way to the consternation of the rest of the world. And that's in spite of the fact that a realistic assessment of our history would include many aspects of reality that would not only surprise, but also embarrass a great many. I prefer truth to fanciful fiction even though the later may make me feel more secure and bolster my ego.
This is all just rehashed Soviet propaganda. There are some detailed analyses of the TV series that make for interesting history in of themselves.
I dont really understand people that say Stone is trying to give you an AGENDA or an opinionated history. Its a FACT truman did what he did. Its a FACCT 27 million people died and its a fact Stalin was a shit general, but he just happened to be running the country at the time of need. The inner circle of Moscow, the people that didnt know anything about the rural areas, DID think Stalin saved them. Everything ive read and he puts in these books or any of his movies is extremely well researched AND he was in fucking vietnam. lol. So if anyone knows what vietnam is like, someone whos THERE probably knows a bit more about it than someone who doesnt. All of the stuff written in here is facts. Also most wars do start with an opportunity. then the opportunity is seized with or without a false flag attack. I cant see anything in Stone's movies or books that isnt backed by facts. NIXON DID meet those teenagers on outside the Lincoln memorial. What i think is Stone has broken your ILLUSION of history and your pissed off at it.
