Durante quase três anos Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) cumpriu seu contrato com a empresa Lunar Industries, uma mineradora que opera no lado escuro da Lua, extraindo Hélio 3, um material que se tornou a principal fonte de energia da Terra. 

A companhia de Sam na Lua é o robô-computador chamado Gerty (Voz de Kevin Spacey). 

Agora estando próximo ao término de seu tempo contratual, o isolamento em que viveu estes anos começa a pesar na vida de Sam. As únicas noticias que tem do lar e do resto do mundo ocorrem através de mensagens gravadas de sua esposa e filha pois as transmissões ao vivo foram impedidas por um defeito persistente no satélite de comunicação da companhia.

Cada vez mais ansioso pelo regresso à casa, ele começa a ter um sentimento de fragmentação prenunciando uma paranóia. Um acidente na superfície lunar faz com que descubra a existência de um clone seu, levando-o a uma perturbação que contribui ainda mais para exacerbar sua crescente paranóia.

Now standing near the end of his contract time, the isolation in which he lived these years begin to weigh in the life of Sam. The only news we got home and the rest of the world occur through recorded messages from his wife and daughter as the live broadcasts have been hampered by a persistent defect in the satellite communications company.

Increasingly relishing return to the house, he begins to have a sense of fragmentation foreshadowing paranoia. An accident on the lunar surface makes discover the existence of a clone of you, taking you to a disturbance that contributes further to exacerbate his growing paranoia.

"Lunar" is an intelligent scientific thriller that rivals genre classics like 2001: A Space Odyssey.
