Stan Getz, Stan Getz Plays, 1954 Tenor saxophonist Stan Getz is in excellent form playing with one of his finest groups, a quintet with guitarist Jimmy Raney and pianist Duke Jordan. STAN GETZ PLAYS was the saxophonist's first full-length LP, a 10-incher in 1952 (expanded in 1954). To be sure, there are the up-tempo numbers like a speedy "The Way You Look Tonight" or the even more breakneck "Lover Come Back to Me" but what one mostly hears here is Stan Getz the spellbinding weaver of dreams, telling his pretty tales with all those extra little filigrees and pirouettes. There has never been a lovelier "Tis Autumn" or "Stars Fell On Alabama" or "You Turned The Tables On Me" - not by an instrumentalist, at any rate. This set is rounded out by four bonus tracks that Getz cut with a quartet in 1954 that co-starred pianist Jimmy Rowles, featuring drummer Max Roach.
