Um advogado (Michael Fassbender) está prestes a se casar com sua noiva (Penélope Cruz), e decide juntar dinheiro participando de um dos esquemas ilegais organizados por seus clientes. O plano envolve o tráfico de centenas de quilos de droga, no valor de 20 milhões de dólares. Apesar de hesitar no início, ele aceita. Mas a execução do esquema não ocorre como planejado, e logos todos serão visados pelos chefes de um cartel mexicano. Enquanto os outros parceiros têm experiência no crime e sabem como desaparecer, o advogado não sabe como agir, e teme pela segurança de sua noiva.
