are there any subs for the japanese speaking parts? The included english subs are subs for only the english parts. I would really like to have subs for the japanese spoken parts, even though Shogun was never broadcast with them.

No. There are not supposed to be subs for the Japanese parts.

Yup its as OP says, the original experience is meant to be enjoyed without japanese subs as it ads to the intrigue of being a foreigner in a strange land, if anything is intricate for the viewr to know its repeated in english. All in all its worth watching this way, as you go watching you come to learn more and more of whats truly a beautiful language.
