1280x720 has an aspect ratio of 16:9, the standard for HD video/TV.
1280x696 is ~1.85:1, a common aspect ratio for films.
Because films have a wider format, if you wanted them to completely fill a standard 720p/1080p, 16:9 display without any letterboxing (black bars at the top and bottom), you would either need to crop the frame (cutting off the sides, losing part of the picture) or stretch the picture vertically (thus distorting it).
When you see movies listed here as 720p or 1080p, they rarely actually are because so few films use the 16:9 aspect ratio; the vertical pixel count varies from film to film. Instead, think of them as 1280p or 1920p horizontal resolution, as this is their one constant.
